The craftsman behind our stage costumes: Fabrizio Fedi
Fabrizio Fedi is the founder of the Lumen Invoco group. Ex-performer and teacher, today he takes care of our image and realizes for us high-level artisanal stage costumes.
What experience that made you passionate about poi art?
I discovered the practice of poi in 1999 during a trip to Thailand. One day while I was at the beach, from afar, I noticed a girl who moved her arms. Given the distance I could not understand what she was doing. Then she got closer and it was then that I could see that these spheres were spinning, depending on how she moved, all around her body in a different way. I was incredibly fascinated, so much so that for the whole holiday I dedicated myself to learning this art. Then when I saw poi in the evening with the fire burning, I was moved.
How did you get the idea of forming a group of artists?
The idea of the group was born consequently to my journey. Practicing poi art had put me back in motion and this gave me a great physical and mental benefit that I thought was important to share, starting with the people around me. Many of them, like me, experiencing this practice, became passionate and from that moment we started training together. At that point I thought that I could exalt something that in itself was spectacular by creating synchronized choreographies, in order to amplify the effect and make everything even more interesting.
How did you learn to make clothes?
From the beginning, in addition to performing, I was involved in the creation of the group stage costumes. Even now that I no longer perform, I continue to take care of the image of the girls. This is because creating clothes is a great passion for me. Even as a child, to play, I made small clothes. Growing up, I then had the chance to work in a company that made clothes and this experience allowed me to understand how to develop and implement the projects that come to mind. After all, a dress is a project that is realized with very few elements but lots of creativity.
What inspires you when you choose to create a new model?
The inspiration for the group’s clothes comes in a way that is directly proportional to the type of suggestion we want to evoke from time to time. Depending on the musical context, the type of event for which the show will be destined and the sense we want to give to the performance, we create the most suitable dress to tell our message. On the occasion of historical re-enactments or exhibitions that take place in castles or medieval villages, a spectacular costume and fabric is preferred. On the occasion of weddings or private events I always choose very elegant outfits.
What about the choice of fabrics?
I always work with the goal of unifying the image of girls and to do so I select fabrics and create models that help me in my intent. The other aspect that I take into account when I create stage costumes for fire shows is the safety of those who perform. I therefore prefer fireproof fabrics like wool. Wool has a high water and nitrogen content, so it hardly catches fire, if not at temperatures much higher than those that are enough to burn fabrics such as cotton, polyester or acrylic. This makes it the best fabric for making our costumes.
